Regional Hospitals (prior to 1960)

Victoria Hospital (old Town) - surgical patients.

Stratton St.Margaret - for medical patients.

Princess Margaret Hospital was built later..

Dr. Coombes Started treating patients in Purton in 1900s living at Chewton House. In 1920 the Surgery moved to Norbury ( where Norbury Ct is). In 1959 Norbury was sold and the surgery moved back to Chewton House. Slowly the surgery expanded and moved to the new modern premises in 1991.

Initially surgery times were typically 8.45 - 9.45 in the morning and 6.15 - 7.15 in the evenings (visits took up a lot of the remaining times). Now such opening hours are unimaginable.

Regional Hospitals saw patients who were referred within weeks - not so now as many of you know.

Many Doctors have worked here since 1900. Some emigrated to other countries while others just moved to other counties but special mention is needed of Dr. Belt and Dr. Schaps who served this community long - well over 25 years.

Doctor's Earnings (1959)
